I recently watched a short film about a young transgender woman who is also autistic. In my private Facebook group for parents of LGBTQ kids, there does seem to be quite a few whose kids are both transgender and autistic.
In looking at an article on the subject, it appears that it is not uncommon and has been and is currently being studied.
There is a growing consensus in the medical community that these two do occur at disproportionate rates. And what does that mean?
This hints at a connection between the biological causes of both transgender identity and ASD. I firmly believe that both are biological. I don’t have any proof and am not a professional. It’s just something my instincts tell me is true.
A person who is on the spectrum doesn’t have less right to express their gender identity than someone who is not. Each person has the right to express their gender and to identify with what is in their mind and heart.
Time will tell what the connection is between being transgender and autistic, if one does exist. I’m so glad the research is being done.
