I’ve been watching the Black Lives Matter movement and while I knew that black trans women were targets of violence and murder, I didn’t realize just how widespread the problem was.
After watching 13th, the documentary of the impact of the criminal justice system on blacks and the history of that, I never realized that the same impact was felt by black trans women.
Billy Porter did a couple of videos on the subject on his Instagram account and he addressed the discrimination withing the black community toward the queer community and particularly the black trans community. He talks about it HERE.
I read an article earlier this week about the devastation the black trans people and black non-conforming people face at the hands of the criminal justice system. It was so disturbing that I had to stop reading.
What I do know is that while we stand up for black lives, while we support black lives matter and their movement, we have to stand up for black trans lives. Black trans lives matter too and we cannot forget them.
