The end of the decade is just a couple of weeks away. It doesn’t seem that long ago we were all anticipating the turn of the century and now that was 20 years ago!
As we approach this milestone, I can’t help but think of the many ways my life has changed in the last 10 years, not the least of which is being 10 years older! My memory is not as good as it was and, in some ways,, I’ve slowed down.
I’m healthier than I was 10 years ago. I exercise more and I feel stronger. I’m happier than I was 10 years ago. I wasn’t unhappy then. I was quite happy so it’s remarkable that I am happier.
I moved across the country, something I never could have anticipated 10 years ago. I live in the south, something I never would have imagined!
My life purpose came into focus in the last 10 years. I found my true passion. 10 years ago I though my passion was marriage equality. And I was very passionate about that, make no mistake about it. But I found working with and serving parents of LGBTQ kids is my truest passion. I so love the parents of LGBTQ kids and feel so humbled by their love and devotion to their kids, even when they don’t understand and are still grieving the loss of who they envisioned their child to be. I learn so much from them. As my friend Jim say, they are the bravest people I know. And the fiercest!
As I look forward to the next 10 years, I know I can’t imagine where I will be and what I will have done. I’ve learned to live in the present, just this day. But at the end of the decade, it’s kind of fun to look back and see how far I’ve come and look forward to what is yet to be.
