Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. It is a day that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
For me, it is a day to remember those who lost their lives for no other reasons than they were transgender. It is also a day for those of us who are allies to raise awareness, to stand up and speak up for transgender rights. Sometimes it feels like one voice, one person can’t make a difference. But if we all felt that way and then did nothing, nothing would change.
It saddens me that we have such a day. I will never understand what the threat is from transgender people that others feel they deserve no respect, no rights and should die. People are people, whether cisgender, transgender or genderqueer. Today I honor the memories of the beautiful people who have died in anti-transgender violence. I pray for them and I pray that the violence will stop.
Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. How will you remember?
