prideI grew up in the 50’s and 60’s. There was no Pride as we know it today. The Stonewall riots were the impetus for the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

In the beginning, it was all about gay liberation. Yes, there were organizations for lesbians too but the movements were largely separate.

The AIDS crisis of the 80’s changed that. Gays and lesbians came together to protest, to care of the sick, and worked together to make changes. It was a real coming together of what was two communities into one.

Much has changed since those days in the 80’s. It almost feels lie AIDS is a thing of the past, though we know that is not true. AIDS is still an epidemic and the disease still spreads.

Gays and lesbians come together every year in June and other months to celebrate Pride. The dictionary defines pride as “a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.” There is a lot to feel pride in these days. We have marriage equality and all around the world we are seeing changes. I do agree that many changes are not fast enough.

The pride parades and Pride month are for LGBTQ people and their allies and supporters. They are no longer gay and lesbian events only. But there is still work to do in the LGBTQ community. Bisexuals feel invisible within the community. Transgender and queer people often feel ignored.

I know many, many people who are gay or lesbian who see these issues and are not okay with them. But too many don’t and we still have to work on being inclusive within the LGBTQ community. If we cannot be inclusive, how can we expect to be included? What are your thoughts?
