I haven’t written a book report in more years than I’m willing to say! I recently came across the book Some Cats Start Out as Dogs. It is a chapter book for kids, probably around age 8 and up. It’s the story of a group of dogs, the Murphdogs, who have banned together to do good. One of the dogs, Peanut-Man (also known as Mr. P.) is a little troubled.
Mr. P. gets into trouble once in a while and the story opens with the Murphdogs getting kicked out of Bingo due to Mr. P’s antics. The other dogs are kind of mad at him and his feelings get hurt so he follows a raggedy, one-eyed cat home. There he is forced to confront what’s he’s been hiding from himself and others.
It turns out that this dog is coming to terms with the fact that although he was born a dog, he’s really a cat. Now that’s he aware of this, he has to decide what to do and how to tell the other Murphdogs.
Sound familiar to any of you? It’s a great way to help kids understand what it means to be transgender and what it means to have the support and encouragement of your friends and family. It teaches understanding, support and acceptance. It’s a wonderful book that I think children will find engaging and easy to understand.
It would be a great addition to a child’s book collection as well as any school library. You can get a copy HERE and check it out yourself.
