I belong to three private Facebook groups for moms of LGBTQ kids. Two are for Christian moms and they call themselves Mama Bears. You know how fiercely a mama bear will protect her cub? Well, these moms are just as fierce in protecting their LGBTQ children.
So, what’s a Mama Dragon? Well, I’m not sure I’ve ever read about maternal instincts in dragons, but I know they breathe fire! This is a group of mostly Mormon moms who are just as fierce about advocating for their LGBTQ kids, especially in their church. Sometimes I feel like a fraud in these groups because one, I’m Jewish and two, I’ve never had to advocate for my son the way these moms have. When he came out he was already an adult and living on his own. But I know I belong because I am fierce about my son having equal rights and just as fierce about those LGBTQ kids who have no one to advocate and support them.
Last night I attended an event in Sacramento called The Mama Dragon Story Project. Kimberly Anderson is a photographer and the curator of amazing stories of some of the Mama Dragons. She has created a book of their stories and it is so powerful! I was privileged last night to hear some of these incredible women tell their stories in person.
I won’t attempt to recreate their stories. What I can tell you is that for some, their world was turned upside down when their child came out. There was never any doubt of their love for their child above all else. I can’t begin to comprehend what it was like for them. For some, they’ve lived their entire life in the church. It is all they knew. For others, they embraced their religion as a choice. Either way, they knew how the church felt about LGBTQ individuals. Many of them supported Prop 8 in California at the insistence of their church and now felt shame for the message that gave their not yet out child. Their bravery in telling their stories inspired me.
