I received that news over the weekend. My gut response was “good!” Not that I think it will change anything. The Westboro Baptist Church will still spew its venomous messages in its most inappropriate ways. They have always disgusted me and I’ve always wondered how they could call themselves Christian. This picture is a small example of what they do at funerals of soldiers, victims of violence and the LGBT community. What saddens me most about this photo is the innocence of this child carrying such a hateful sign.
The Huffington Post has an article today, “Should Fred Phelps Sr., Westboro Baptist Church Founder, Have His Funeral Picketed?” with a poll. Within that article are two very moving arguments against picketing. George Takei said, “I take no solace or joy in this man’s passing. We will not dance upon his grave, nor stand vigil at his funeral holding “God Hates Freds” signs, tempting as it may be.
“He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely, dusty end.”
The other is from ex-communicated former member of the Westboro Baptist Church, Lauren Drain. You can read it in the article linked above.
When I voted, the no’s were ahead and that gives me hope. We cannot let hate win.
