A Gallop Poll was released today on “Americans’ Views on the Morality of Major Societal Issues.” Of course the topic I am most interested in is gay or lesbian relations. Here is the breakdown of the percent finding them morally acceptable by age:
18 to 34 years |
35 to 54 years | 55 and older | Net support among 18-34 vs. 55+ |
74 | 54 | 51 |
+23 |
From the report, “Acceptance of gay or lesbian relations among Americans aged 55 and older is now 25 points higher than it was in 2001. While Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 have consistently reported support for gay and lesbian relations at higher levels than older age groups, their support has also risen by 22 points in the past 12 years.”
This poll does not indicate acceptance of same-sex marriage but with this change, that cannot be far behind. As more and more LGBT people come out and live openly among their families, neighbors and co-workers, acceptance increases on all levels. This gives me a lot of hope!
