June is Gay Pride month. For the past 24 years, I’ve been flying a gay pride flag in front of my house for the month of June. I do it in support of my son and to show support for the LGBT community and the fight for equality.
This month, for the first time, my synagogue will be holding a Pride Shabbat. In the Jewish faith, we celebrate the Sabbath from sundown on Friday evening to sundown on Saturday. We hold services on both Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. The last Friday of this month our Services will be dedicated to gay pride. We will have LGBT members of our community greeting people as they arrive and three speakers sharing their stories. One will be a teen, one will be a gay or lesbian parent raising children and one will be a parent of a gay child. I will be speaking as the mom of a gay child, sharing my story and my passion.
I couldn’t be prouder of my Temple for standing up for pride this month and committing to make this our first ANNUAL Pride Shabbat. What are you doing to celebrate pride month?
