A friend recently brought me Time Magazine’s April 8th issue with the cover story, Gay Marriage Already Won. In yesterday’s Orange County Register there was a front page article with a similar theme.
The theme is one I’ve written about before; gay marriage is sweeping the nation. Rhode Island became the 10th state to legalize same-sex marriage. It was only April of 2011 that the same legislation stalled due to lack of support in the legislature and contentious debate. Beginning August 1st, same-sex couples will be able to commit to and marry the person they love. And today, (May 7th) Delaware became the 11th state to legalize same-sex marriage!
Other states considering gay marriage this year include Illinois, New Jersey, and Minnesota. Minnesota is poised to pass marriage equality with today’s Senate Committee vote. Now it’s up to the full State House and Senate. We could have the 12th state by next week! And if the Supreme Court does its job the way I want (!), California will join those states embracing equality.
The other fact pointed out in these articles is that approval for same-sex marriage has risen from 27% in 1996 to 53% today. That is remarkable! The percentage approving is only 39% for those over age 65 and 73% for those 18-29 years old. Truly, it is just a matter of time!
