The Boy Scouts of America is considering ending its ban on gays. It’s been in the news all last week. If you’ve been asleep or haven’t watched any news at all, you know that they reaffirmed their ban on gays only 7 months ago. Why are they reconsidering it again so soon? I imagine it’s because they’ve lost sponsorship (also known as money) and membership (also known as money?) and let’s face it, the public opinion is rapidly changing on the issue.
That is, unless you consider those on the right like Governor Rick Perry of Texas who is an Eagle Scout and a strong supporter of maintaining the ban. For some reason he thinks that including gays means the scouts will focus on sex education. How does he jump to that conclusion? Their meeting agenda doesn’t change, their badges don’t change, it just means scouting is open to all.
Yesterday President Obama spoke out in support of lifting the ban. “My attitude is that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does in every institution and walk of life,” Obama said. “The Scouts are a great institution that are promoting young people and exposing them to opportunities and leadership that will serve people for the rest of their lives. And I think nobody should be barred from that.”
