Yesterday, The Boy Scouts of America reaffirmed its longtime policy of barring openly gay boys from membership and gay or lesbian adults from serving as leaders. The policy “reflects the beliefs and perspectives” of the organization.
Both my sons were in the scouts. I thought it would be good for them particularly because they had an absent father, rather typical for those days. I was divorced and their father was not around much. While somewhere in the deep crevices of my mind I knew my older son was gay, it was nowhere in my consciousness. This was the last 70’s and early 80’s. Were we even talking about scouting and gay rights back then? No, it wasn’t a topic of conversation or concern.
Today, I think about the sons of same sex parents and what they must think. Maybe they want to be scouts and they hear the organization telling them that their parent is not good enough to serve. What message does that relay? Is that message in conflict with what the scouts are teaching? What do you think?
