Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in the United States. This has been a year of changes for me and I am so thankful.
I’m thankful to live in a state filled with natural beauty. I’m thankful to live only ½ mile from my older son and to see him as often as I do. For the 29 years before this, we lived 450 miles apart and only saw each other once or twice a year. In the beginning, that was good! As the years passed, I missed him more and more and wanted to live near him. Now I do!
I’m thankful to be so much closer to my younger son, his wife and children. When the grandkids were young, I flew from California to Florida 3-4 times a year to see them. As they got older, it reduced to twice a year. This year I’ve seen them 3 times and will be spending Thanksgiving with them.
I’m thankful to have a family who loves me and who I love. I’m thankful to be on this journey of life with my husband. He makes me laugh and I get to be silly with him. It doesn’t matter than I’m a “senior citizen.” I can still access my child and he brings that out in me.
I’m thankful for my sweet little dog, Kahlua. She makes me smile and laugh. I don’t think I’ve ever loved an animal as much as I love her.
I’m thankful to live in a beautiful house, almost brand new. It really is my dream house and I never thought I’d live in a house that has everything I’ve ever wanted in a house.
I’m thankful for the friends I’ve made here so quickly. They are so special to me. And I’m thankful for the friends in California. I’m looking forward to seeing many of them next month.
I’m thankful for the many, many parents of LGBTQ kids I’m privileged to know. Many I know from PFLAG. Their dedication to helping other parents is inspiring. Most of them I know from secret groups on Facebook and have never met in person. But I know them and I know their hearts. They are strong, committed to their children, advocates of the first degree, dedicated to making this world safe for all LGBTQ kids. They inspire me with their honesty, their feelings, their love for their LGBTQ child.
Thank you for reading, for being my support and my inspiration. I’m thankful for you.
