My friend Sara Cunningham posted this on Facebook: “PSA. If you need a mom to attend your same sex wedding because your biological mom won’t. Call me. I’m there. I’ll be your biggest fan. I’ll even bring the bubbles.”
Her post went viral and has been picked up by the media. Let me tell you a little bit about Sara. She’s the mom of a gay son. She is whole heartedly dedicated to making the lives of LGBTQ people better, especially those who have been rejected by their families. She tours around the country with her “Free Mom Hugs” tour. She has given and received thousands and thousands of hugs. She is an example that love wins. She is an example of pure, unconditional love.
She is inspiring moms across the country to volunteer to be the “mom” at any same-sex wedding where there will no bio parents. And I thought, why not me too?
I’m honored to be the adoptive (not legally, just by heart) mom to a young lesbian who was totally rejected by her Christian family. I’m one of 3 moms who have adopted her and are there for here. Sometimes she calls me Susan and sometimes she calls me mom. I love it when she calls me mom!
Sara has inspired me to open my heart. I sometimes think the heart can hold just so much love and no more but watching Sara, I see that is not true. I can be “mom” to others as well.
So, if you’re in or around North Carolina, you’re getting married and don’t have a mom who will attend, let me know. I’ll be there! And like Sara said, I’ll even bring the bubbles!
