I’m loving pride this month. June is typically Pride month and even though we do not have our Pride Parade until August, it’s pride all over the country. Everywhere I look on social media, I’m seeing pictures of pride.
The feelings are palpable, even through photographs. I see the joy and freedom on the faces of strangers. I see the freedom of being able to express one’s self. I imagine for many of the people celebrating pride, that feeling does not come often enough.
I’ve marched in the San Francisco Pride Parade for several years and marched back in the early 90’s. It’s always amazing to me how much we, the parents of LGBTQ kids, are appreciated. We are there to honor and appreciate the LGBTQ community and I know there are too many watching from the sidelines who don’t have the love and support of their parents and families. We are there, like Jeanne Manford did 46 years ago, to tell the world that we love, support and celebrate our LGBTQ kids and the LGBTQ community.
This year will be my first year to march in Charlotte Pride. I will be marching with PFLAG of course! This month, I’m flying my Pride flag outside my house all month. Easy to spot my house as you drive by. I’m the only one on the entire length of my street with a Pride flag. I hope someone drives by and smiles, knowing that there is support and love for them in my neighborhood.
